Top 5 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

Planning a wedding or any significant milestone event can be a thrilling yet overwhelming experience. Among the many decisions you'll make, choosing the right photographer to capture your special moments is crucial. Here at Chelsea Reeck Photography, I understand the importance of finding a photographer who not only captures stunning images but also understands your vision and makes you feel at ease. To help you make an informed decision, I've put together my top five questions to ask your wedding photographer. Let's dive in!

1. How would you describe your photography style?

The photography world is teeming with talent, but not every photographer can bring your vision to life. Understanding the photographer's style is essential to ensure their artistic vision aligns with yours. Some photographers specialize in traditional, posed portraits, while others focus on a documentary-style approach, capturing candid moments as they unfold. Asking about their style will give you an idea of how your wedding story will be portrayed. This is especially helpful if you are considering a photographer who is skilled in multiple styles. It will be helpful for you to hear how they describe them, and it will be essential that your photographer understand you expectations.

2. How many weddings have you shot and can we see examples of full wedding galleries?

A photographer's portfolio may showcase their best work, but asking to see complete wedding galleries will provide a comprehensive view of their skills. Examining full galleries will help you gauge their consistency, attention to detail, and ability to capture the entire day's narrative. It's also worth inquiring about their experience and how many weddings they have shot. It’s common for new photographers to attend styled shoots to gain experience and build a portfolio. And while there’s nothing wrong with styled shoots, they cannot replace the experience that comes with an actual wedding.

3. How do you make couples feel comfortable in front of the camera?

Feeling at ease in front of the camera is essential for natural and authentic photographs. A photographer's ability to establish a comfortable atmosphere can make a significant difference. Ask about their approach to directing and posing couples, as well as their strategies for creating a relaxed and enjoyable experience during the shoot. I include (require!) an engagement session with every wedding I shoot. The main point of this shoot is for all of us to get together before the wedding and establish a certain level of comfort. There’s an inevitable awkwardness when meeting someone for the first time. I do everything I can to break that ice before we even get to the wedding.

4. What is your backup plan in case of unforeseen circumstances?

Weddings can be unpredictable. It's essential to know how your photographer handles unexpected situations. Ask about their backup plans for equipment failure, illness, or any unforeseen circumstances that may arise. Knowing they have contingencies will give you peace of mind on your big day. One of the most common mistakes I see rookie photographers make is shooting on cameras that only record photos to a single memory card. With only one card, all it takes is a simple malfunction, and all your wedding photos are gone. Veteran photographers use cameras capable of recording on two cards simultaneously. That way, the moment the shutter is clicked, you have a backup of your photos. You can take this question a step further and ask about a specific time things didn’t go as planned and what actions they took. It might sound a bit like a job interview, but it will give you a window into how the photographer acts under pressure. I work with a team of photographers and other creatives that are ready and willing to step in should any unforeseen circumstances arise.

5. “What do you consider to be the most important factor when choosing a photographer?”

You have probably never hired a wedding photographer before. Your photographer, however, has had to consider this question countless times. Asking their opinion might reveal something you have never considered. It’s also a good way to gauge the experience of your photographer. Many beginner photographers will talk about the quality of the images. While quality is important, it’s not the most important thing. In fact, good photographs should be a minimum expectation, not a unique value. I tell all my couples that the most important factor is how well you vibe with your photographer. After your partner, your photographer is the person you’ll be spending the most time with at your wedding. If your photographer isn’t someone you enjoy on a personal level, you’re setting yourself (and your photog) up for a frustrating day.

Choosing the right photographer is a pivotal decision in preserving your wedding. By asking these questions, you can gain valuable insights into their style, approach, and ability to make you feel comfortable in front of the lens. At Chelsea Reeck Photography, I strive to provide an exceptional experience while authentically capturing your love story. Remember, finding a photographer who not only produces beautiful images but also understands your vision and connects with you is the key to capturing memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.
